Building of the barrel maker museum

On this page we will post updates on the building of our barrel maker museum.  We will regularly publish the latest status, photos and videos on the progress of our museum. If you can’t come visit, at least you can virtually come along and have a look!

At the moment. we are trying to figure out which tools and machines to exhibit. We are realizing that we have far too many things to exhibit. So we will have to choose and what goes into the exhibit and what stays out. At least for the moment. One option is to have changing exhibitions and rotate everything. But we are pretty sure that things will fall into place over the next few months.

Today we drove to Kandern in the so-called wine region of the Markgraeflerland (about a 80 km drive from here at the base of the Black Fores towards Switzerland). We have found out that there is another Barrel Maker Museum in the outskirts of Kandern and we are excited to see what they offer. Maybe we can do some brainstorming with the owner of the museum there and collect new ideas for our project.

Today we tried to organize some of the wine barrels we have discovered in our cellar over the past few months. Our grandson Nicolas came over to help us figure out which ones are worth being displayed in the museum. He also suggested to take 2 of the wine barrels and transform them into a wine bar – which is a great idea! So visitors will be able to enjoy a glass of wine while looking inside the barrel which will be lit up inside. We are getting more excited the more organized this project gets.

Things are taking shape! It’s still a mess all over and we don’t know where to put most things…but the first barrels are up! The rain forced us to stay inside today so we had plenty of time to figure it all out – looks great!

We have to admit - it's still a mess

Here is a great video from the fifties showing exactly how a barrel was produced. Enjoy!
